So they’re charging Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in federal court as a criminal defendant, so he’s not an enemy combatant, meaning he gets a trial, an attorney, no indefinite detention, etc. (Despite him being Muslim and being charged with using weapons of mass destruction.)

So please tell me more about how he doesn’t get white privilege.

Its more that he’s an American citizen and has been in this country since he was a little kid. There’s no real basis to try him as an enemy combatant, it would be blatantly illegal. If he wasn’t an American, he’d be whisked off somewhere and we’d never hear about what happened to him again.

José Padilla.

Truth. I forgot about him.

I guess one reason Tsarnaev is getting cut some slack is because the entire country is paying attention to this case, and very few paid attention to Padilla. It has a lot to do with the difference in the crimes they were accused of, and probably has something to do with the fact that Tsarnaev is this 19 year old cherubic-looking (white) child, and Padilla was a grown Latino man.

Another reason is that this is a different administration, and they function differently. Unlike Bush, Obama has a reason to look good on human rights — he’s a Democrat, and he needs to throw his base something, every now and again. Bush was just under the political imperative to “look tough” at all times.

Another reason is that Padilla collaborated with foreign enemy combatants, and was accused of training in Afghanistan, etc. The Boston bombings were entirely domestic events.

Yaser Esam Hamdi

go ahead and try to make excuses about this. we all know you will since apparently “everything but white privilege” is your final answer.

If you’re white, the “Justice” system should terrify you

racismschool:

The lie of the “Justice” system is that it’s there to protect white people. This is a fallacy. One that will one day, sooner rather than later, come back to haunt you. The “Justice” system is there, not to protect white people but to protect white people from being punished. (In addition to making massive profits of course) White people, both those who work to be non-racist as well as those who don’t, might take some comfort in knowing that in most cases, they don’t have to worry about the police. Often, they have no reason to think about the system at all. The part so many of you seem to be forgetting is that while some of you will read about the Prison Industrial Complex and others will absorb statistic after statistic that says Black people are unfairly targeted, given higher incarceration rates and longer sentences for the same or lessor crimes, you haven’t thought about what that means for you personally.

While your skin color may work in your favor as far as jail time goes, being a victim of white-on-white crime, is quite the opposite. 96% of all rapes are committed by white men. Yet, 80% of rape inmates are Black. This means most male rapists are walking free. Free to rape again, simply because of the color of their skin. Now, add that to the fact that most crime, is intraracial and not interracial and you have white on white homicide at 86%. White on white homicide is slightly lower than Black on Black homicide but remember, Black people are getting sent to jail these days for breathing. White people are being given less than a slap on the wrist for even vicious crimes.

If you are white, not only should you be angry that criminals with your skin tone aren’t getting punished, you should be terrified that criminals of your skin tone will find you.

Wait, people are claiming that having to tan or be super pale is oppression?

polerin:

Coming from someone who, for most of her life, has been so pale as to be goddamn blue…..

WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAT THE FUCK.

Hell no.  Don’t make me blind you with my white as fuck legs for being fucking obnoxious, that’s not oppression. It may be rooted in sexism and the male gaze, but jesus christ if that is all you have to worry about?  Being told that you’re not tan?  Boo fucking hoo.

who is this person and where can i hero-worship her

Pardon me for interrupting, but why would you “hero-worship her”??

I am Chinese, I grew up in Guangdong and now live in Beijing. My surname is Yang (杨/楊 in simplified/traditional Chinese characters). And allow me, a born-and-raised-and-live-in-China Chinese, not so humbly inform you: Both Cho and Chang ARE Chinese words pronounced in the Cantonese dialect (the major dialect spoken in Guangdong and Hong Kong), and they are written as 秋 (or any homophones) and 张/張 in Chinese characters. Ask any Cantonese-speaking Chinese, and they’ll tell you this. And SURPRISE: both Cho and Chang can be used as first name AND last name in Chinese.

To sum it up: The girl speaking in this gifset clearly has NO knowledge at all of Chinese language, and is acting very presumptuous about it. And to me, that is a case of racism.

EDIT: Quoting from wikipedia, “Chang is the pinyin romanization of the Chinese surname 常 (Cháng). It was listed 80th among the Song-era Hundred Family Surnames” and “is also the Wade-Giles romanization of two Chinese surnames written Zhang in pinyin: one extremely common and written 張 in traditional characters and 张 in simplified characters and another quite rare and written as 章 in both systems.”

Important commentary

Yeah, as soon as I saw this I was like “Chang is a Chinese name as well though”. I wasn’t sure about Cho so I didn’t reblog.

The HP books aren’t fab on the race front, but yeah. Don’t spread presumption and misinformation.

the point of the poem is not just the gifset, it’s the entire fucking poem, and the fact that the gifset wasn’t fucking credited pisses me the fuck off.

her name is rachel Rostad. This is the entire poem.

But yes commentary but even more is that this quote is placed within the context of something really fucking important that needs to be said.

So I’ve been seeing some of the stuff floating around about Anita Sarkeesian’s series on videogames ‘Women vs. Tropes’ and her decision to disable YouTube comments. Firstly, I fully support her 150% in deciding to disable comments. Despite the protests of ‘we just want discourse!’, most comments…

I first want to disclaim that I am a “white” woman and therefore my opinion may be unwanted or unworthy and that’s completely okay, I know I can never understand racism the way woc do.

As far as I can tell, Anita is trying to avoid talking about racism for two main reasons:

- She’s trying to make this series as safe as possible, that is, she will be keeping the analysis somewhat superficial, the audience is assumed to never have considered much of the media they consumed. After she lays the ground, so to speak, and can establish a group of people that are on the same level with her, she will be able to go into other sides of the issues and make another, more general and more in depth review of games as popculture.

- She knows she is in no place to discuss racism, being white, maybe if she could get a partnership with woc, so that they could speak of racism as they saw fit, more inclusive tropes vs women could be made, but as of now, she already needs to finish a project that’s way more ambitious than her previous projects, so unfortunately it’s gonna have to wait.

I know I sound like I’m just “whitesplaining”, but believe me, I’d like nothing more than an approach to critique that regarded most women.

But….this is what white feminists have been saying for years. “It’s not the right time.” “Gender first, because it’s less complicated.” “When xyz happens, THEN we’ll talk about race.”

So many big name white feminists have made and continue to make similar claims: the suffragists, Jessica Valenti, Amanda Marcotte, and yet when these women reach wide audiences by engaging with systems of power like whiteness/ class privilege, they don’t turn around and clear the path for WOC rather they continue on with exclusion and marginalizing politics. This is the history of the white feminist movement. I’m tired of being told to wait, because my experience of gender (and because I experience racialized gender doesn’t mean my experience is somehow less about gender than a white woman’s) is too ‘complicated’ for people to understand. Pro Tip: it isn’t. Whenever I talk to people about intersectional feminism, they’re responses are usually much more affirmative than when I talk to people about Valenti-brand white feminism.

This is a big project that Anita’s got funding for, in fact it’s unlikely that a WOC could raise the same amount of funding for a similar project. For this reason I hold her doubly accountable. It’s not WOC’s job to reach out to white women. It’s white women’s job to always consider decentralizing whiteness and to proactively include WOC in their organizations.

I keep seeing that disney/racism post

feministdisney:

frostpebble:

and idk, I really don’t get it because…

if you’re talking about individual artists or whatever, it’s all “draw what YOU want to draw, for you!” so why doesn’t this apply here too? if disney wants to make a movie about white people THEY CAN MAKE A MOVIE ABOUT WHITE PEOPLE????

I mean sure, it’s GREAT to have movies focusing on different races and cultures. and there should be more of those. but just because this ISN’T one doesn’t make it bad or racist? idk man people just like to get upset

a lack of current movies about other races and cultures is racist and bad because it is an act of exclusion.

Also: most criticism isn’t even about focusing on “different” races and cultures.   It’s about including even a few characters so that it’s not an all white cast in movies made in 2009, 2012, 2013, whatever.    Focus is good and necessary too, but that’s not even what a lot of people are criticizing at the moment.   It’s the fact that Disney is waaay below “focusing.”

Most people who feel mis- and underrepresented in media, such as POC, are not getting upset just because they like to get upset.    Most people would rather not get upset at all; most people are not super political and at the end of the day would just like their little sisters, brothers, kids, to be able to look at the movies and shows everyone their age sees, and not always be confronted by the fact that no one ever looks like them, or if they do, these characters are relegated to the background.    It would be nice for movies like Tangled, which appropriated the floating lantern tradition from Asia, to at least include one asian character.    Instead, the cast was 100% white. POC in starring roles cannot just happen once a decade.

Individual artists can  do what they want because their art will probably not be viewed by millions of children, and sell millions of dollars worth of merchandise.   And asking people and their kids to just “opt out” of Disney or whatever isn’t really an option when it is everywhere, unavoidable, and something kids will talk about/like with their friends, whom parents cannot control.

FROZEN IS BASED ON THE SNOW QUEEN, A STORY WHICH ORIGINATES FROM SCANDINAVIA

NATIVE SCANDINAVIAN PEOPLE ARE WHITE AND…

Okay, you know what? I’m going to take the time to stop all of you.

The fact you’re bitching about the race of someone from a movie that doesn’t even have a TRAILER out yet, is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen.
When Princess and the Frog came out, everyone was complaining that she was a black Princess whose story was taking place in America and not Africa. And that the Princess in that fairy tail wasn’t black to begin with.

You see where I’m going with this?

No matter what choice Disney makes, no matter what fairy tale they chose and the setting, someone is going to find the need to hop on their racial soap box and try to look like the Martin Luther King. Jr.  You are not him, you’re not being a hero, you’re being ridiculous.

Judging someone, fictional or not, by the colour of their skin without knowing them at all is THE MOST racist thing you can possibly do.  Skin colour doesn’t dictate who you are. And the fact that “white” people are lumped into one group is unfair and stupid. Germans, French, English, Danish, Irish, Scottish, Welsh all are considered “White”. But each country has their own heritage and culture. And yet whenever there’s a “new white” Disney girl, you treat her like she’s just a copy of all the other “white Disney” girls. Belle is French, Rapunzel is German, and Ariel is Danish - those are three different countries, three different cultures.

Saying two characters are “copies” of each other because they’re white is gross. What if the new Disney girl was black? Would you be yelling that they were trying to copy Tiana? No, I bet you wouldn’t.

That movie only came out three years ago, by the way. It’s not like it’s been 20 years since the last PoC character.

And you know what you also just did? Instead of celebrating the fact that Pixar contributed a Princess from a country that in media, often produces stereotypical male characters, you’re bitching that she’s another white girl.
Excuse me, she’s Scottish.
How DARE you undermine her culture based on her skin colour.

You’re complaining that Disney is doing it? Well, if they are then so are you.
They also always have several projects being worked on at once. While you sit here and bitch about no PoC movies in the works, you’re automatically assuming that they’re not poking around for a good story.

I never have, and never will care what the skin colour is. Because skin colour says nothing about who you are or what you stand for. And in the end, a person’s heart, fictional or not, is the only thing that matters.

And you’re also passing judgement on a movie THAT DOESN’T HAVE A TRAILER.
Jeeze, you see one white girl and fly off the handle.

image

Are you kidding me, really?

Really?

Are you really trying to pull a “this is like, reverse racist against white people” argument because we have a desire to see more PoC representation in media?

Are you REALLY playing the “I don’t see race! I’m colorblind!” argument? (An argument that has actually ben linked to racist ideals)

Really?

i know it’s hard but putting aside pacific rim for the moment, let’s talk about neil blomkamp’s (district 9) latest: elysium, which is coming out the same year

In the year 2159, two classes of people exist. The first are the very wealthy who live on Elysium, a pristine man-made space station built by the Armadyne Corporation. The rest live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard-nosed government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That does not stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky ex-con Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

looks like a good year for interesting, original sci-fi

wow yes

not to be a party pooper but how is this not like literally every other dystopian sci-fi film with ham-fisted metaphors about the sociopolitical zeitgeist

whoopie another beige white dude saves the segregated day…

wow a story of anti-immigration centered around yt ppl

the only thing this is missing is a forbidden yet inspiring heterosexual romance (also starring white folks)

Fuck this noise. GO see After Earth with Will and Jaden Smith.
