Obama Bombs Yemen Hours After Winning Reelection

Not even a full day had passed before newly reelected President Obama ordered another drone strike in Yemen. Huffington Post:

On Wednesday morning, as many Americans sifted through the voter data and exit poll numbers of President Barack Obama’s reelection the night before, the Twitter feeds of close watchers of Yemen lit up with reports of another sort of presidential event: an apparent U.S. drone strike had killed several individuals in that country.

“All signs (after dark, suspicions of locals, target) point to Sanhan strike being a US drone,” Yemen-based freelance journalist Adam Baron wrote on Twitter.

Several other analysts concurred.

A White House spokesman did not respond to a request for comment. If it were a American strike, of course, it would have to have been authorized by Obama.

The drone war violates both domestic and international law, and the Obama administration’s vehement disdain for transparency in government is the only thing keeping it from public and legal scrutiny. Beyond the law, it’s terrorism.

it’s not even a day and i’m already outraged.

the worst thing, besides this being a terrible thing to do to any country with whom we’re not at war, is that now this is a Democratic thing to do—like, it’s one thing for the Republicans to be shitty and war criminals, but for the Dems to follow in their footsteps…

I just hope progressives push these motherfuckers on this shit. Because it’s just sick.

WOW. COOL.

Beloved Cyclist “Chuey” Munkanita Beaten Unconscious and Arrested By Police
Kachusha “Chuey” Munkanita is one of the most beloved figures in the San Francisco cycling community.  He’s known internationally for his hand-made cycling caps, made and sold right here in the Mission.  And everyone, from MASH to PD Bird, know him to be a “peaceful” and “non-violent” person.  He even delivers coffee, by bike, for De La Paz Coffee Roasters—a company undeniably of peace.
So it’s with great shock and disgust that we learn of his arrest and police beating while trying to monitor SFPD’s treatment of Latinos.  A close friend of his forwarded along his story:

Thursday night/ Friday morning Chuey stopped on the side of the street in the Mission when he saw the cops having 4 Latinos lined up against a gate. He stopped to make sure the youth were being fairly treated.
The cops then asked him to cross the street, when Chuey said he couldn’t observe from across the street. They (2-3 cops) jumped him as he was hugging his bike. They wrestled him to the ground then continued to push him into the ground, twisting his arm, slamming his head into the ground. He was in jail for almost 24 hours and released after his family paid bail. They charged him with 3 felonies for assaulting 3 cops with enough force to cause grave bodily harm and  2 misdemeanors for resisting arrest.

Chuey was released on $150,000 bail and arraigned yesterday afternoon at the Superior Court of California, where he was issued a public defender.  Chuey is also faced with steep medical costs after having to visit the ER for his injuries, where doctors advised him to have a cat scan.
Currently, there is no fundraiser planned to aid in his defense, but friends are encouraging people to purchase his caps, helping support him financially in any way possible.  You can get his caps online at Mission Bicycleor MASH (who will donate all proceeds to his defense), or in person at Box Dog Bikes or Pushbike.
Update: Roaring Mouse Cycles and All Hail the Black Market are also donating their cut of Chuey caps to his legal aid.

You Can’t Be a Princess” | Journalists from ABC’s “What Would You Do?” planted hidden cameras in a Halloween store and filmed shoppers’ reactions to a boy who wanted a princess costume and a girl who wanted a Spider-man costume.

Riley is not impressed. Honestly. Stop it now.

So much love for that last lady.

The video made me cry so much.  I wasn’t expecting that punch in the gut, I guess it was a little too close to home.  Bless the lady at the end who stood up for the kids.

I feel like this show stops being ok if the people you’re ~experimenting~ on are children. Because even if it’s fake, you’re helping to internalize the message that gender variance is bad.

Idk, usually they’ll show the behind the scenes with the actors themselves (including the kids) and from what I’ve seen it’s been very clear that they understand gender essentialism is bad, and that they’re happy to be able to combat it in some way.

Maybe I didn’t understand your point?

^That’s good. As long as the kids and other people too are given a head’s up/briefing BEFORE the actual social experiment, then cool. As long as it’s not veering into exploitation, no matter how crucial and important the points are, then awesome.

I think in the middle of every heated debate about female Disney characters that focuses mainly on the princesses, there should be a twenty-minute break just to bask in Lilo’s glory.

Oh damn-I missed this one. :( Sadly, the voodoo here would probably constitute as problematic given shoddy representation. Like it’s so blatantly culture appropriation taken away from the media. But I can’t help but not care as much as I would normally because Lilo is one of the VERY VERY VERY FEW female characters that’s a genuinely well rounded complex realistic representation-and a Hawaiian young woman at that! And two, you can sorta quasi forgive it since you could go with the logic of “hey she’s a little kid!plenty of kids do stuff like this w/o any idea of the implications  of what cultures mean etc.” (although not completely! since the REAL creators could have chosen to edit this!). The creators could have gone to have a a natural moment-just one comment would have done really-about how it’s not cool to take other culture’s things beyond the (very awesome IMO) idea of Lilo “punishing” her friends. Or they could have had Lilo “punish” her friends w/o the fake voodoo implications. :( Still a GLORIOUS movie though! And a GLORIOUS character at that! :D Still, I can’t believe I missed this one. I know that Disney would go on to FULLY bastardize that culture in Princess and the Frog. :/

“Eating disorders, once unknown in Japan, are now increasingly more rapidly than anywhere in the world. Yet women have to wait seven years for treatment.

“America’s definition of Anorexia is anyone who is 15 percent under their standard body weight. If you applied the same metrics to the Japanese population, than more than half of the country’s young women would be considered Anorexic,” he says.
…
More disturbing is the endless billboards and magazine covers of young women-often depicted as little girls with pubescent figures- used to sell everything from milk to mobile phones. This young, innocent girl image is an extension of a unique Japanese obsession with “kawaii” culture. It’s a celebration of all things cute, such as dolls, cartoons and comic book figures, and often these Kawaii images can become sexualized as well.
The line between a reality and a fantasy body is blurred and some doctors believe it can contribute to body obsession among young Japanese girls “There are certain images that young people want to pursue that belong in Kawaii culture,” says Dr. Suematsu, “Young girls especially want to look like their favorite characters, even if they are not real. And, often these characters are unrealistically thin.”
Psychologist Dr.Norio Mori concurs. “Kawaii in Japanese means cute. And for many young girls that’s the ideal.”
Dr. Norio says the influence of the media and Kawaii on young girls means that there are more patients coming in with eating disorders- and they seem to be getting younger. “One of my Anorexic patients is only 9 years old,” he says. If a girl develops an eating disorder in her teens in Japan, she often continues to battle it in the twenties and sometimes even longer.

They also work and have money to buy things and access the conveniences of the city. Japan’s major cities are vibrant at night and all the shops are open till late, some never shut. A person with an eating disorder can go into any convenient store –which are on every street corner-to buy binge food whatever time they like. These stores also lack human interaction, so a binger can go into the store over and over again and not be embarrassed about their compulsive behavior.”

I don’t think people realize how prevalent eating disorders and body shaming are here. I can’t have the TV on more than 30 minutes without coming across some bizarre diet system or variety show poking fun at “fat” people (by fat I mean, like a 21 bmi). Every girls magazine is filled with disturbing photoshopped ads for weight-loss and articles on how the models got down to 38kg. It’s very easy to slip into anorexria here as the general idea of dieting is “Eat little” not eat healthy and exercise.

And I mean adore

I think her war on childhood obesity needs to be…re-examined. She needs to make it clear that being overweight does NOT necessarily mean you’re unhealthy and that it’s okay to be fat. I think when you deal with kids especially, you need to reiterate that your body type is okay. Period.

There is quite a bit of body shaming and ableism in her ‘move’ plan that needs to truly be addressed.

Yes, having children exercise is a good thing, but for a great portion of fat people, exercise is nothing more than another reminder that ‘my body isn’t good enough because it is fat.’ And it completely ignores those who literally CANNOT move due to disability.

Not to mention the fact that there is little to no active involvement in helping nutritional access to poor areas. I’ve seen nothing in her plan mentioning eliminating food deserts.

Also, people need to be aware of the fact that the whole campaign was not created to make kids healthier but in response to a paper released by retired military generals called “Too Fat to Fight.” The whole movement is to make sure kids have the correct body type to enter the military once they come of age. This is also why there is a huge focus on low income communities, communities of color etc. Why she has spoken out about how “obesity” is a national security issue.

Basically it isn’t just about making kids healthy…thats just what they want you to think.

Well, damn. That puts things into perspective.

Welp, that does it.

Michelle Obama, you can kick rocks for that bullshit.

I remember that. The military was talking about how a lot of people joining lately weren’t “fit” enough for service. So they have to spend extra time getting them in basic shape before getting them in military shape. I know a guy, actually, who joined the military while still in high school (to start after he graduated obviously), and he had to lose 60 pounds before he could go to basic training. He’s been out of school two years now? And he still isn’t “fit” enough to start training.

Yes. Beautiful points all above! And these are things that have been in the back of my mind for a while too. Make no mistake. I simply ADORE her as well! I also just hope we white people don’t exploit this serious issue to shit on Michelle Obama just for being a POC either. :C I just can see it now. We white people fucking will do it-we’ll do it for senseless/non-issue crap, I sure as HELL know we’ll do it when it actually concerns pertinent issues. Although! She DID point out in the Sep 2 issue of PARADE how the campaign is still needing to REACH disenfranchised communities with access to affordable/”healthy” foods (however broad that term is).

Pe’ Sla is an area in the Black Hills of South Dakota (just west of Rapid City) that is considered by the Lakota people to be the Center and heart of everything that is. It is part of our creation story. It is a sacred place. We perform certain ceremonies at Pe’ Sla which sustain the Lakota way of life and keep the universe in harmony. This area is partly owned by the Reynolds family. They plan to auction off almost 2,000 acres on August 25, 2012 to the highest bidder. It is likely that the state of South Dakota will put a road directly through Pe’ Sla and open up this sacred place for development. The seven bands of the Lakota/Dakota/Nakota Oyate (people) aka Oceti Sakowin (Great Sioux Nation) have a collective effort to buy as much of Pe’Sla as we can at this auction (although we also believe that the land cannot be owned and that our sacred places were illegally taken by the United States). Yet we are trying to work within the current U.S. laws to regain custody of our sacred sites and prevent future road and industrial development. Our sacred ways must be protected and passed on to our future generations so that our children may live. This area of the Paha Sapa (Black Hills) is also home to many plants and animals who should also be protected. In fact, many consider that the area should possibly be a historical site, which would also assist in protecting it from future development as well. As Lakota people, our ancestors prayed here, at Pe’ Sla, at certain times of year, when the stars aligned. We cannot go elsewhere to pray. We were meant to pray here. This is what they do not understand. Please help the Lakota people. “Let us put our minds together and see what life we can make for our children.” Chief Sitting Bull, 1877 We have a group of young professional Native people that are dedicated to the promotion of education, health, leadership, and sovereignity among our indigenous Nations. Our goal is to assist in any way possible the purchase of Pe’ Sla and other sites by a collective effort of the seven bands of the Oceti Sakowin (Great Sioux Nation) - the Lakota/Dakota/Nakota people. All proceeds from this campaign will go towards that effort. This area would be open to tribal nations for ceremonial purposes. The plants, animals, water, and air in the area would be respected and honored.
