Angelina Jolie announces a double mastectomy to save her life, people get fucking pissed and act like she’s lost everything that’s made her worthwhile in the first place, AND YOU WONDER WHY I FUCKING HATE THE “SAVE THE BOOBIES” TROPE.

BECAUSE NO ONE ACTUALLY GIVES A FUCK ABOUT THE WOMAN’S LIFE. WOMEN JUST HAPPEN TO BE ATTACHED TO A PAIR OF BREASTS. WOMEN AREN’T WORTH SAVING—BUT YOU BET YOUR ASS THE PUBLIC WILL BE IN A RIOT IF A GOOD PAIR OF TITS IS IN DANGER.

Cis* is not correct Trans*gender isn’t correct either. Same with trans*woman trans*man (because they’re specific identities).

I see cis allies fuck this up at least 3-4 times a day. Stop it, you’re making yourself look bad with the people you claim to care about (not questioning your ability to care or calling you a liar, but I am saying that the effort isn’t matching the words), and it confuses so many people that have never heard the terms before. The asterisk isn’t necessary every time you write the word trans. It’s only purpose is a shorthand to differentiate between trans, which usually is just short for transgender, and trans*, which is the umbrella term which contains specific identities like trans/bi/agender, transvestite, transsexual, gender queer, non-binary, all of that jazz. When you’re referring to a specific person or identity, don’t use it.

Seriously. Please. Stop. Using. The. Asterisk. For. Everything.
Love, a slightly annoyed trans woman ❤

Hi I know you don't know me or anything, but I saw you used "trans*gender", and just want to let you know the asterisk isn't necessary c: I have a post on it on my blog but tl;dr the asterisk is used to show that it is the umbrella term for non-gender conforming people instead of trans, which is shorthand for transgender (a specific identity). Anytime it's a specific identity, don't use it, and the "gender" part shouldn't go after it.

I’m sincerely sorry for this serious oversight. I shall try to go back and edit it. My sincerest apologies. I’m sorry you had to bring this to my attention. Thank you so much for your input. :) Sadly, I’ve fucked up a lot with this and will try to edit the previous posts (there is unfortunately a lot :( ).

Hating an entire group of people for the way they were born is never a good idea. I don’t even care if that group is currently enslaving your people, it’s still not okay. Everybody is an individual, and there’s no “oppression” gene. Hate the hateful individuals who have wronged you, not the countless ones who have done nothing to you besides be born the “wrong” color or of the “wrong” sexuality or of the “wrong” gender. That is never okay. Bigotry never solves anything.

We need to have a talk about what social scaffoldings of oppression look like real fast.

The fact is that, in most cases, you don’t really find people who are openly, vocally, and violently bigoted. (Though this obviously differs depending on what axis of oppression we are looking at.)

Most oppression manifests itself as more systematic, social, legal, financial forces that reenforce marginalization and inequality. These forces do not need evil hand-rubbing snickering villans, ready to commit personal and physical acts of violence to support them. These forces, rather, are supported by attitudes  many of which are so normalized and socialized that the privileged don’t notice them. This means that anyone, even normal, nice people can be supporting systems of inequality without realizing it.

The idea, for example, that LGBTQ+ characters are inappropriate for children’s TV. Or that the “way black people talk” is funny. Or that women are just naturally much better at taking care of children.  That it’s ok to pretend that there were no PoC in Europe until the trans-atlantic slave trade. Or that a “tranny” (please excuse the slur) is good for a joke. That it’s ok to dress up as an “Indian” for Halloween, and that Cinco de Mayo is a great excuse to wear a sombrero and get drunk. These kinds of attitudes are taught in our culture, taught in our media, and reenforce and justify the oppression and marginalization that permeates our culture. These attitudes, held by normal, nice people, are the BIGGEST problem and the biggest source of support for those systems of oppression.

To make it simple: It is not enough to simply NOT be a raging, vocal bigot. You must actively and consciously work to be an advocate for equality if you don’t want to uphold injustice. You must unlearn the shit you’ve been taught and then help others unlearn. Otherwise you ARE the problem. Doing nothing at all IS the problem for most people.

Oh my god did you just take intro to sociology in school wow so impressive. Too bad you’re delusional as hell. Apparently bigotry is A-OKAY until EVERY SINGLE person on Earth becomes an SJW? That’s what I’m getting from your last paragraph. Here’s an idea though: how about instead of waiting for the world to become a unified utopian society, we all try to stop hating individuals for being born a certain way? I think that’s a little more realistic. We can start with you since you seem to be justifying bigotry.

Also, if you’re gonna reply to this, leave out the irrelevant wall of text and save it for somebody who doesn’t have a degree in history and social sciences. I’ve read all that shit way too many times and it has nothing to do with my post.

I like the subtle gaslighting there. Yes, because YOU, sir, don’t agree, I, the woman, am “delusional”. Good job. A+

My point was not that we should “hate people because of they way they are born”, or whatever you think it was. I apologize for not being clearer.

My point is that we AREN’T being bigoted against people because they are born male or white or straight or cis or whatever. However, we do often criticize people who still hold problematic attitudes because of the privileges they were born with, even if they aren’t being intentionally problematic.

For example, there are plenty of nice, wonderful white people who would never intentionally be racist in their life, who still dress up as “Indians” for Halloween. Which is racist. Calling those people out is not targeting them for being white. It’s pointing out that they are doing racist shit, even if they weren’t doing it intentionally. I can say this from personal experience. I am white. I’ve had to unlearn a lot of racist shit over time. I’m still unlearning some of it. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, these things must be unlearned, or you are part of the problem.

But none of this is related to my original post. All I said is that hating people for nothing more than being born a certain way is ALWAYS wrong and if you disagree with that then you are too. You can try to justify that if you want but trying to flip this around to make me look like a racist for being white or whatever is silly and doesn’t have shit to do with what my point was. All over this site there are SJWs who literally hate straight people, cis people, men, white people, etc, and defend that hate by saying “oh but they oppress me” when that simply isn’t true and even if it is, doesn’t justify hating massive chunks of the world’s population. If it’s a problem when a white guy hates black people then the opposite is true too. Being “privileged” doesn’t make someone an acceptable target for blind hatred. Bigotry is bigotry and it is ALL bad. I don’t see why this is even up for debate to be honest with you.

Ok, I feel like I’m still not being clear enough. I will try one more time.

Your point is that we “shouldn’t hate people, even if that group is CURRENTLY ENSLAVING YOU” (which, wow, that is some serious bullshit), that we shouldn’t hate “massive chunks of of the world’s population” and that being privileged doesn’t in itself make you a target. Right?

My point is this: If you are part of a privileged group, and you haven’t taken the time to UNLEARN the racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia etc that is instilled in our culture: then you ARE being oppressive. You aren’t some innocent who is being unfairly targeted for being privileged. The DEFAULT here- being born with privilege and then NOT unlearning it, is oppressive. That isn’t your fault, but it is true. You are part of the oppression in our culture. And yes, massive chunks of the world’s population fit that category. And for the record, we are MORE than justified in “hating” people who are currently oppressing (or enslaving) us.

Let me say that one more time so that I’m very clear. If you are privileged, and you have not taken the time to unlearn the bigotry in our culture, then you ARE oppressive. Our “hatred” of you is not “blind hate” against innocents. It is an effort to challenge those who are oppressive to us.

Ok, one more time: We challenge those who are oppressive to us. If you have privilege, and you have no taken the time to unlearn the bigotry in our culture, then you ARE OPPRESSIVE. This is not blind hate. This is self preservation.

To reframe this again: Your argument is “you shouldn’t hate people for being born white/male/straight”. My argument is “that isn’t what’s happening. We are challenging people who, through the privilege they were born with and unwillingness to unlearn their own bigotry, are being oppressive to us.”

I’m not sure I can be much clearer.

“Even if your group is being enslaved, its not okay to hate people because of the way they’re born”

That anti-sj logic right there.

There needs to be a code word or something that means “my brain is fighting me every step of the way today and I feel like I’m going to vibrate out of my skin, so I need you to forgive everything and go slowly and speak softly and lower your expectations.” And then we could all just be like, “I know I said we could go to a movie tonight but… tangerines.” And the other person would nod and squeeze your elbow or rub your head and you wouldn’t feel like a failure.
